THE STORY BEHIND…

An aubergine, a chalice, a dead crow and a passion fruit. Ever think you would see all these things together in one imagine? Didn’t think so. This eclectic array of treasure/junk (we’ll leave you to make your mind up) takes inspiration from the luxury and decedent style of Flemish painting that traditionally contains a collection of objects symbolic for the inevitability of death (known as Vanitas as the art buffs out there will know). This dark, disturbing and deathly arrangement of objects, with the odd bit of fruit thrown in here and there, creates an ominous yet stunning photograph.

This still life is part of the photographic series that sees Jenny Boot create a modern take on traditional, flemish inspired images.

artist

Jenny Boot (The Netherlands, 1969) started her artistic career as a painter, but soon realised photography was an even more precise medium to express her feelings, a language that gave her more control in translating her vision into images.
