THE STORY BEHIND…

These ladies run this household and they run it well. The quiet domestic scene takes on subjects from past representations side by side. How fitting for Jenny Boot to take on Vermeer’s women whom he painted with a sense of dignity and integrity which was rare in those times. They’ve got the vibe of waking up and making shit happen.

This work is inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s Woman Reading a Letter (1663), The Milkmaid (1660), and Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665).

artist

Jenny Boot (The Netherlands, 1969) started her artistic career as a painter, but soon realised photography was an even more precise medium to express her feelings, a language that gave her more control in translating her vision into images.
